The Brainerd Warrior basketball team faced a tall order this weekend with the 13-2 Sartell Sabres coming in on Friday night and the 7th ranked Wayzata Trojans less than 18 hours later. By late Saturday afternoon, the Warriors were all smiles.
Tied at halftime on Friday 34-34 the Warriors used tough help defense and an early run in the second half to open the game up a bit. Joey Sauer had 17 big second half points and finished with 23, Owen Davis was steady all night and led the way with 24, Ben Staehling added 14 as the Warriors continued to share the basketball well. The 74-64 win moved the Warriors into a tie for the Central Lakes conference lead. Saturday saw the Warriors play their best all around game of the year cruising past Class 4A’s 7th ranked team the Wayzata Trojans 91-74. Excellent ball movement led to multiple good looks as Joey Sauer lit up the scoreboard with 34 points and Owen Davis continued a recent surge with 21. Ben Staehling dropped in 14 as seven different Warrior players contributed excellent minutes. Two big wins for the weekend and the Warriors moved to 11-7. Next up the Rocori Spartans Friday night on the road.
