For the first time in three years, the September full moon is at the beginning of the month, usually called the Harvest Moon. Instead, since of it’s early arrival, it is this year dubbed as the Corn Moon .September usually brings with it thoughts of fall and cooler temperatures, and for farmers, the upcoming harvest. That’s why the full moon in the month of September is typically called the Harvest Moon, but in 2020 (like most things), that isn’t the case.
The Harvest Moon name is given to the full moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox, which falls on September 22nd this year. That makes the October 1st the Harvest Moon.
In most years, there are 12 full moons, but some years have 13, and 2020 is one of those years. October is the month with two full moons: the first coming on the first day of the month, and the second, known as the Blue Hunter’s Moon, arriving on Halloween. A FULL MOON ON HALLOWEEN!! The last time we had a full moon for the holiday was back in 2001 and the next time we get to experience a full moon on Halloween wont be until 2039. A sky junkies dream, if you own a telescope you will also be able to see Jupiter moons and some of Saturn’s famous rings.
