As of Monday night it looked like Vikings’ free agent linebacker Anthony Barr was headed east to join the New York Jets. It was no surprise, the Jets have over $100 million dollars under the NFL salary cap to spend, so I’m sure their offer was quite lucrative. Sometime though, between Monday night and Tuesday morning Barr changed his mind, and decided to return to the Vikings. Details are sketchy on the contract, but it looks to be in the 13.5 million a year range. It’s surprising to a degree the Vikes would do this. While teams like the Jets have over 100 million in cap space the Vikings have around $5 million to play with. Somehow, someway they’re making it work. Could we see a surprise release or trade of veteran player to clear up some more cap space? Maybe.
With the moves on Monday releasing guard Mike Remmers and declining the option on safety Andrew Sendejo, that perhaps cleared what they needed to sign Barr. Also leaving via free agency were Defensive Tackle Sheldon Richardson who signed with the Cleveland Browns, and running back Latavious Murray who signed with the New Orleans Saints.
