Joe Mauer, in what could end up being his final game ever in a Twins uniform, got to put the catching gear on one last time in front of Target Field.
The 2018 Twins season did not go as planned to say the least. Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton had terrible years and injuries. Brian Dozier was eventually dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The lineup struggled all season long.
But that all was forgotten on the last day of September for 2018. The rumors started swirling more and more within the last two weeks that this could possibly be Joe Mauer’s last season. That he might hang up the cleats and call it a career. No one knows for sure, maybe even Joe himself, but it sure felt like a retirement announcement when Mauer stepped out of the dugout for the ninth inning in his old catching gear.

I don’t think you could find a dry tear in the stadium as this was going on. The hometown kid from St. Paul, who ironically probably didn’t want any recognition, got what could be a proper send-off to a Hall of Fame career.
