The Brainerd Warrior boys basketball team reeled off their 9th straight win on Friday night against the previously undefeated Alexandria Cardinals.
The game was hard fought by very high school teams with the Warriors winning 86-80. Fast paced and entertaining the game featured impressive runs by both teams. The Warriors jumped out early 13-4 only to have the Cards close the lead to 2 at 25-23. By halftime the Warriors led 39-29 and stretched the lead to 47-33 early in the 2nd half when the Cardinals made another impressive run taking their only lead of the game at 54-53. The Warriors behind great play from Mitchell Degen who scored 18 second half points, stretched the lead to 67-56. From there it was back and forth with the Warriors never losing their cool, continuing to attack and pulling out the 86-80 victory. Griffin Rushin continued his outstanding all around play and finished with 29 points, Rushin is averaging 25 per game. Logan Roberts had his best game hitting 3 first half threes and finishing with 12 points, Max Lewica had key buckets at crunch time in the 2nd half, Cooper Jacobs continued excellent his floor general duties for the Warriors and sophomores Nick Evanson with 9 and Johnny Pecarich with 7 rounded out a great team effort.
During the 9 game win streak the Warriors have won in a variety of ways. High scoring victories with 96 points versus Apollo, 88 against Tech and 80 in the first game against Moorhead. A defensive battle in game 2 with Moorhead 63-60 and a last second win over Fergus as Cooper Jacobs laid in the game winner with under 1 second to go. Excellent passing and hard nosed defense have been featured during the win streak and 5 Warriors have scored 20 in at least one game.
