Am I The Only One Who Hates Roundabouts?

Here we are with the beginning of road construction season.

We got a nice little project going on right here by the station with all the work being done on Cypress Drive in Baxter. To my dismay, I see we are going to have another roundabout put in on College Road right by the station. Is it me or is this becoming a trend in town? I purposely avoid going by Central Lakes College if I can help it for the very reason of all the roundabouts, been to close to too many accidents. It’s not that I don’t understand how they work, I just feel we keep putting more and more in, and less and less people understand how to drive through them.

The fact of the mater is though I’m in the minority on this. According to the MN DOT, roundabouts show an 86 percent decrease in fatal crashes, an 83 percent decrease in life-altering injury crashes, and a 42 percent overall decrease in the injury crash rate at intersections. Roundabouts handle high levels of traffic with less delay than most stop signs or signals. Where roundabouts replace signals, idling decreases which reduces vehicle emissions and fuel consumption by 30 percent or more.

In summary it’s a personal thing with me. Talking with “Wild Bill” morning show host on B93.3, down the hall from us.

He said “if it was up to me I’d rip out every light and 4 way stop in town and put in a roundabout”.

I shutter at the thought. So, my refusal to go through them will add more commute time to my day, but in my mind I will be safer.
